WBBL: Preview

The WBBL side travel to East London to face off against BA London Lions on Saturday.

The team are coming off a close 74-72 loss to a strong Essex Rebels side last weekend. Rebels beat Leicester Riders 82-76 before facing Wolves, giving them their first loss of the season.

The match up was always going to be difficult, but Oaklands showed once again that they can compete with anyone.

Wolves have continued to improve, claiming two wins in other fixtures in recent weeks. The side has put a focus on defence, becoming known for their level of hustle and effort.

The team has also developed their ability to look after the ball and find good shots on offence. In order to beat Lions on the weekend, Oaklands must be excellent in both of these areas.

In their last match up, earlier in the season, Wolves suffered a near 30 point loss to BA. Lions took over a 20 point lead in the first quarter with their high pressure defence leading to easy scores.

However, Oaklands lost the rest of the game by just five points. As long as the team can start well and keep to their game plan, the game is winnable.

Cassie Breen and Kennedy Leonard led Lions in the last match up, scoring 28 and 17 points respectively.

Wolves will look to restrict the two guards as Breen averages 24 points, while Leonard puts up 17.3 points and 10.2 assists per game.

On the offence end, Oaklands guard Amari Carter will lead the way after exploding for 30 points against Essex. Alongside Carter, Greeta Uprus is averaging 11.9 points and Louise Rouse has 10.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.

Wolves will go into the game motivated as they hope to continue their run for a playoff spot.

Speaking to coach Lee Ryan, he said: “This weekend it’s the team sitting on top so we will have to be ready to perform from the jump.

“We’ve had a good week, reflecting on the game and how to keep improving in end game scenarios.

“Last time we played them, Barking took the game in the opening exchanges, we are aiming to be in the game at the later stages this time round.”
