Wolves U-16 girls broke their two-game losing streak as they chalked up a comfortable 75-54 victory against Team Solent Kestrels, on Saturday.
The hosts limited the league's leading scorer Tilly Goddard to 22 points and controlled England big Anna Mendez until the final quarter when coach Tor Freeman was able to run his bench as Wolves moved up to second place in the East Premier table.
Caitlin Ryan led the way with 18 points and ten rebounds in 22 minutes while Dalma Szigeti and Paris Tyson had ten points apiece, with the former adding seven boards. Stella Piscitelli-Ekblad and Amye Swinney each pulled down seven rebounds to with eight and six points respectively, while Jemima Uzuko had 11 boards as all 11 Oaklands players scored at least one basket.
After an even start, Ryan hit seven points in a 15-7 run that put the hosts in charge s they went into the first break leading 24-15 before extending that advantage to 42-25 at half-time. A 19-9 third period extended the lead to 27 at the final break allowing Freeman to give everyone plenty of court time ahead of this week's key game against Richmond Knights.
There was disappointment for both U-14 teams as the girls lost 55-40 at Cambridge Cats and the boys suffered a 98-35 defeat at Milton Keynes Breakers.
Both sides were missing key players, and the boys never recovered from a 36-11 first period as Breakers took a 55-22 lead into the locker room before wrapping things up with a 24-6 third period.
Without top scorer Otis Lau-Johnston, Darrell Deyankeson led the way with ten points, while Jacob Edrupt added nine, and Jeremy Akpan finished with six points and as many rebounds.
Meanwhile the girls couldn't build on an 8-5 first period as they went down to Cambridge. Cats took control with a 19-8 second period to go into the locker room 24-13 ahead and wrapped up the win with a 13-10 third period followed by an 18-14 final frame. Lucy Conlan led Wolves with 12 points, while Sophie Walsh added 12 and Yasmin Murphy six
