First Round WBBL Trophy Success
The WBBL side earn a much deserved 52-61 win against Cardiff Met Archers in the WBBL Trophy first round.
The three hour journey to the Welsh capital didn’t affect the Wolves as they came out the gates with intensity. Oaklands moved the ball well against the Archers pressure, while the home side played through their forwards Mara Marchizotti and Shannon Hatch as the first quarter ended 18-14.
Wolves had a fantastic second quarter, holding Cardiff to just 10 points and only allowing them to score once in a six minute period. The sides impressive defence turned into easy offence as they scored in transition and executed in the half court. Led by Louise Rouse’s 11 first half points, Oaklands claimed a 28-31 lead to end the half.
The home team found rhythm after the break as Marchizotti and Hatch continued to dictate the offence, providing good shots. Wolves struggled to look after the ball and find good shots themselves, but an 8 point quarter from Amari Carter kept the side in the game as the quarter ended 44-45.
Heading into the final 10 minutes, Oaklands did a much better job of reducing turnovers and also attacked the rim well. Sparked by the effort of Lauren Milligan, the side prevented Archers from finding good shots as they contested all attempts on the perimeter and by the basket.
Wolves fantastic play saw them take an 8 point lead, which they calmly closed out down the stretch to win 52-61.
The Cardiff pairing of Marchizotti and Hatch finished with 17 and 13 points respectively, while also grabbing 10 rebounds each.
Oaklands starters shared the scoring as Rouse finished with 15, Greeta Uprus with 14 and Dorka Boros and Carter with 12.
A great win for the side who have rallied together during this tough start to the season. The Wolves will advance to the next round of the trophy which will take place away on Sunday against Leicester Riders.
