Division 1 Men: Preview

It's a big weekend for Wolves' men as they are away for two key games.

Thomas Baker's team travel to Nottingham Hoods on Saturday before making the trip to Barking Abbey on Sunday, and in common with Wolves both of the teams they'll face are in the bottom three with two wins to their names.

Nottingham and Oaklands met on the opening night of the league season with Hoods edging a tight game 76-72 but they have won only one of their ten games since.

Victor Olarerin led the Hoods with 19 points that night and he is sixth in the D1 scoring chart with 21.3 points per game and sits third in the steals table with 2.7 per game. He also pulls down 6.6 rebounds per game in a team-high 29.8 minutes per game. Meanwhile Laurits Juffer leads Ben Stanley’s team with 6.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists while adding 8.1 points, with Delaney Powell – the only Hood in double figures as they crashed to a 73-point loss at Thames Valley last week – adds 14.8 points and two steals per game.

Barking also made a good start to their league campaign, winning their first two games, but head into Saturday's home game against Derby Trailblazers on a six game skid. The teams only met once last season, Barking surviving a comeback from Leopards to win 82-74, and the return to Oaklands was due to be played on the weekend when the basketball world stopped due to Covid-19.

American Jase Harrison lead Barking in points (13.7) and steals (2.4) and adds 3.4 rebounds in an average of 24.1 rebounds. GB junior international Veron Eze continues to shine for the London side, averaging 11.3 points and 1.9 assists in a team-high 28.3 minutes per game.

There will be a couple of familiar faces in the Abbey line-up, with former Leopards Will Ashby and Jamie Hayes bringing some experience in limited minutes for them. Ashby was club MVP when the Big Cats won Division One in 2015 while Jamie Hayes twice won the club’s most improved player of the year trophy.
